Materia Medica
In Materia Medica, we used the Xbox Adaptive controller to create our own controllers in a game about being an apothecary. I’m quite proud of the mortar and pestle, which have an embedded button, and a trigger hidden beneath a pad of rubber bands to add resistance. Also, I made the wooden knife in the woodshop out of a scrap piece of 2x4 offcut I found.
Recording Foley
Materia Medica uses a lot of foley I recorded myself. Since the focus of the game was making the tools “feel” as good as possible to use, I really wanted a satisfying sound for each of them. Since I wanted a particular motion in the sound of the pestle and knife, I recorded them myself. The mortar and pestle was borrowed from a teammate and recorded in the voice booth, and the cutting sound was recorded as I was making breakfast in the morning, and realized the sound of me cutting potatoes was perfect for what we needed.
